How To: Use FT-Optix with a WAGO PFC and the CODESYS Edge Gateway

This document demonstrates how to interface Rockwell Automation’s FactoryTalk Optix with a WAGO controller using the CODESYS Edge Gateway. By utilizing the Edge Gateway, FT-Optix can directly scan the controller for its tags and import them into an FT-Optix project. This reduces development time, simplifies design, and improves accuracy by eliminating manual entry errors.

Thank you for this information. I do have a question concerning connecting from FT-Optix to a Wago controller using the Wago controller as an OPC-UA server. This seemed to work in FT-Optix version 1.5 fairly well, yet stopped working in version 1.6.

Do you have any experience, comments, or recommendations on this?

Yes, I’ve heard that the FT Optix V1.6 OPC UA client driver encounters errors when reading objects from the CODESYS OPC UA server, whereas it works fine with Optix V1.5. I’m not aware of a resolution at this point—other than using the older version of Optix or switching to the CODESYS Ethernet driver instead of OPC UA.

Not sure why this fixes the OPC UA issue between FT-Optix 1.6.1.15 and CODESYS 3.5.19.7, but you need to add your OPC UA variables under the Communication Manager → OPC UA Server → Symbol Set branch, rather than under the Symbol Configuration branch in the CODESYS IDE. Once that’s done and downloaded to the PLC, FT-Optix works correctly.
